Body found in Colombia believed to be missing American Airlines flight attendant, authorities say
MEDELLIN, Colombia. â Authorities in Colombia say a body has been found in the search for a missing American Airlines flight attendant from Dallas who disappeared during a layover in MedellĂn.
Officials said Friday there is a âvery high probabilityâ the body is that of Eric Fernando Gutierrez Molina, though formal identification is still pending. The body has been sent for identification, according to authorities.
Gutierrez Molina, 32, was on a layover in MedellĂn after flying in from Miami when he was last seen early Sunday in the La AmĂ©rica neighborhood. Investigators said he had gone out to a nightclub with a coworker before he went missing.
Authorities previously said he failed to report for work, prompting concerns from colleagues and loved ones and triggering a search.
The mayor of MedellĂn said investigators now have âvery strong leadsâ on suspects in the case, though no additional details were immediately released.
Friends and family had reported that Gutierrez Molina had been out with a female coworker during the layover when they were approached by a man who wanted to spend time with them. They also said the coworker was later drugged but has since recovered, and that information was shared with authorities.
Gutierrez Molinaâs phone last pinged in a residential area, and there had been no contact since he was reported missing.
Back in Texas, his partner of 10 years and other relatives have been awaiting answers. His father traveled to Colombia to assist in the search.
âWe are actively engaged with local law enforcement officials in their investigation and doing all we can to support our team memberâs family during this time,â an American Airlines spokesperson wrote to Local 10 News on Friday.
Partner of missing American Airlines flight attendant âshatteredâ by mystery Colombia disappearance
The partner of an American Airlines flight attendant missing in Colombia has been left âshatteredâ over his disappearance â but is still clinging onto hope that he is still alive.
âI want to believe that heâs alive, and I want to continue believing that heâs alive, but throughout each day you wake up not knowing anything and it makes the days go by longer and slower,â Ernesto Carranza told CBS News Thursday.
Eric Fernando Gutierrez Molina, based out of Dallas-Fort Worth, failed to show up for the MedellĂn-Miami flight he was supposed to work Sunday morning â hours after going out in the city with his co-workers, and officials fear he may have been drugged.
Carranzaâs concerns intensified when he couldnât get hold of his 32-year-old lover that morning â despite him having a work and a personal cell phone â and noticed unusual cell phone pings that came from two locations.
âBoth locations were nowhere near where he was supposed to sleep for the night,â he said.
A cell phone ping came from an Airbnb in MedellĂnâs El Poblado neighborhood â around 12 miles from the cityâs airport.
Carranza spoke to his partner before he went out with his colleagues and told him, âhave a good night, be safe, I love you.â
âAnd he just messaged back, âok I love you back Iâm going to go out and hang with my crews,ââ he told NBC5.
He and his colleague met two men at a club and decided to âtake the party to another place,â his pal Sharom Gil told the Colombian outlet Telemedellin.
âIâm missing a part of me. Heâs the most joyful person to ever be around. Weâre so lost right now,â she said, describing her anguish.
Gil said messages no longer reach his phone even though she knows the location.
Medellin authorities say the other people who were with the AA crew member have a track record of carrying out thefts using the incapacitating drug scopolamine, dubbed âDevilâs breath.â
Tourists in bars and nightclubs in major Colombian cities have had the tasteless, odorless drug mixed into drinks before being attacked, the US Embassy in Colombia warned.
âIf ingested or exposed, scopolamine can render a victim unconscious for up to 24 hours or more,â the embassy said.
This makes them an easy target for perpetrators to attack.
Officials have identified cars and phones used by the suspects.
Missing person reports have been filed with the Colombian and American authorities â and the flight attendantâs dad has also traveled to Colombia.
The FBI may also coordinate with the embassy and local law enforcement, but ex-agent Ken Gray warned it would not lead the investigation.
âThe FBI cannot do an investigation on their own inside a foreign country. Instead, they work with the police in that country, the national police usually in that country,â he said.
