LaGuardia crash cockpit audio reveals final three minutes before fatal collision
National Transportation Safety Board officials have released the results of an Air Canada cockpit voice recorder in the fatal collision between the passenger jet and a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport in New York.
They said the final three minutes showed that air traffic controllers at New York’s LaGuardia Airport were juggling a developing late-night emergency on the runway just before the jet collided with the vehicle.
A United Airlines flight had twice aborted takeoff and reported an odor coming from the back of the plane. However, no gate was immediately available, so the pilot and controllers negotiated over the radio as controllers tried to reach the airline and find a safe place to put the plane. Audio recordings captured the chaos.
No place to park the aircraft was found, so air traffic control dispatched fire trucks to the plane instead and offered stairs to evacuate passengers, all while managing other traffic.
Moments later, the jet crashed into one of the fire trucks, killing two pilots and injuring dozens.
A flight attendant survived being ejected more than 320ft (100m) into the air in a fatal plane crash between an Air Canada jet and a fire truck.
Solange Tremblay was strapped into her seat when the aircraft collided with a port authority van in the process of landing at LaGuardia airport in New York on Sunday night.
The crash destroyed the plane’s cockpit, killing the two pilots, Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther, who had flown Flight AC8646 in from Montreal.
“It’s a complete miracle. At the moment of impact, her seat was ejected more than 100 meters from the plane. They found her and she was still strapped into her seat,” Ms Tremblay’s daughter, Sarah Lépine, told Canada’s TVA News.
“She had a guardian angel watching over her. It could have been much worse.”
Ms Tremblay suffered a fractured leg and will undergo surgery.
Jeff Guzzetti, a safety expert and former federal crash investigator, told The New York Post that Ms Tremblay probably survived because of her “robust” flight attendant jump seat, which is equipped with a four-point restraint.
Mr Guzzetti said that the jump seat was made to endure crash loads more so than the passenger seats, since flight attendants are needed to assist passengers out after a crash.
Footage from the scene showed the aircraft’s nose smashing into the side of the fire truck, leading it to flip over repeatedly. Audio recordings of air traffic controllers guiding the vehicle across the runway before the crash were also released, in which panicked staff can be heard urging the driver to “stop, stop stop”.
In a recording from after the accident, one of the controllers can be heard telling a pilot that he “messed up”.
Brian Bedford, an administrator with the federal aviation authority (FAA), paid tributes to the pilots who were killed in the crash.
Forest and Gunther were reportedly employed by Jazz Aviation, a partner of Air Canada that operated the aircraft.
“These were two young men at the start of their careers; it’s an absolute tragedy that we’re sitting here with their loss.”
The aircraft carried 72 passengers and four crew members, with 41 people taken to the hospital following the accident, nine of whom were thought to have been seriously injured.
Mr Bedford said the agency was “committed to a full and transparent investigation” into the cause of the crash.
Investigators have recovered the black boxes from the jet, according to a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board.
The runway is expected to be closed until Friday, and delays are likely to continue at the airport.
