HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Gerhardt Konig attempted murder trial took a dramatic turn today. Jurors hearing directly from the defendant’s son about a chilling call moments after the alleged attack.
19-year-old Emile Konig took the stand, describing a FaceTime call he said he received from his father, Gerhardt Konig, shortly after the alleged attack.
Emile testifying that his father told him he had tried to kill Arielle, but she survived.
“That he would not be making it back to Maui, and to take good care of the younger kids, and that Ari, my stepmom, had been cheating on him. And that he tried to kill her,” said Emile Konig.
He told jurors his father also said he was going to jump off the cliff, to which Emile told him not to. And that Gerhardt ended the call, telling him he had to go.
“He ended the second call with him saying, with the defendant saying, ‘I’m going to go before the police catch me,’” said Emile Konig.
In cross-examination, the defense pressed Emile, saying he told police his father sounded calm but distressed and that he assumed his father tried to push Arielle off a cliff.
“When the detective asked you about that, you clarified the part of that pushing her off the cliff was what you assumed he meant, but not what he actually said, correct?” said Thomas Otake, Gerhardt Konig’s attorney.
“Yes, correct,” said Emile Konig.
In court, Emile Konig never called Gerhardt his dad, nor did he ever look at his father during his testimony.
Earlier in the day, jurors heard from a digital forensics investigator who detailed what prosecutors said was Gerhardt Konig’s online activity leading up to the incident, including searches about infidelity and hikes on Maui and Oahu, including the Pali Puka trail, and purchases of secret recording devices.
The prosecution wrapped up its case, and on Wednesday, the defense takes over, with Gerhardt Konig expected to testify.
